Hey Readers, Today I would be discussing about some thing that we all know about but we never ever analyzed it or tried to improve it i.e. ‘Average Time On Site’. Almost every blogger uses Google Analytics to check about the visitor stats, page-views, traffic sources and a lot more. We always have a look on Average Time on Site, but we never gave any stress to our mind to check how can we improve it. No Worries.
Increase Average Time on Site:
Let’s get back to some maths
How Average time on site is calculated. It is the Average time per visitor stays on our website. Does it really matters, that a person stays or not? Do You think, the answer is NO. Well no, the answer is YES. If a person visits your website & stays for just 2 mins and the other person visits your site & stays for 25 min, which one would benefit you more? Ah!! Now your mind is working. Obviously 25 min person. Because, he would be navigating across different posts, categories, pages and in short, he would be giving you more Page Views.

So Today, I would be Sharing some tips to Improve Average Time on Site.
Clear Navigation
Navigation, the most important part of any website/blog design. By navigation, we mean that a visitor should not get confused about now what to do, where to click, etc. He should be able to find categories, next previous post, subscription box, comment box at the very easily reachable place. For eg: If a person visits your blog and he is trying to subscribe to your email updates but he is not able to find it. Will that person stay for long on your website OR will he come back again on your website. You already know the answer. So, work on the navigation on your blog and try to make it as simple as possible.
Effective use of Internal Linking
Internal Linking is an important aspect related with Average time on site. People tend to read the posts related to some particular posts and if you attach a link to some of the important words in the blog post, people will click on them. For eg: In an article, you talk about the WordPress has a lot of plugins, just interlink the word ‘plugins’ with any of your post related with it. It will help you in increasing page views as well as it will increase average time on site because a reader would be indulged in reading more & more on your blog.
Including Videos
Videos, everyone knows they take your time if you start seeing it. On an average a person would take two minutes to read a post, and if you are smart enough and add a video tutorial of the post of 2 min, I think your maths is good enough now. Yes, you are right. The person took four minutes to complete the post or at least 3.5 . Hence, resulting in Increase in the Average Time on Site. Goal Accomplished. There is an additional benefit of the video posting as well, people tend to understand how to do a particular thing quickly and they tend to visit your blog for any sort of tutorials.
Improve Loading Time
How loading time would help in increasing average time on site. You have this question in your mind. Don’t worry. I’ll answer it. By using my tips provided in the article, your readers would surely visit more pages on your blog. But if your blog takes too long time to open the blog post, people would get irritated and they will tend to get rid of that stress. So, try to improve the loading time of your website/blog, so that if people tend to stay on your site and read few more article, they are able to reach there as quickly as possible
Make it Interesting
Yes, it is required. As you must have seen many speakers on the stage that they keep on adding humour. Why? Because they don’t want their listeners to get bored and leave the auditorium. Same is the case here, we don’t want our readers to get bored with serious text and leave the website within couple of minutes. Indulge them like they are having a conversation with you by using the phrases like, you must be thinking this, am I right?, you know the answer and many more that gives a chance to the reader to respond.

Thanks for sharing your experience yayha! see you again here.
I like your points but what i was wondering is that using video can increase the loading speed of our site …..so i personally feels that its not a good idea
Well in my experience , you tube is best its fast loading and doesn’t effect your site , where as other small tend to increase website page load time.
very helpfull tips for sure i will apply these all on my blog
thanks Ujjwal for spending some time and reading my post.
thanks for passing by and dropping a comment.
we should use internal linking in a good way we should no follow the links from the other sites
Yea i am glad to know that Google still respects the no follow attribute , because i heard they are gonna stop using using follow and no follow and start treating them both as do follow.
Hi Harneet! You are so right about including video to keep people on the site longer. I include videos from my YouTube channel in most of my blog posts and it works wonders! Some people are staying for more that 30 minutes just watching the videos and reading the comments from others. I also use audio podcasts this way. Thanks for the post!
youtube videos are great to embed on a website , they don’t increase the page load time and increase the user engagement , i don’t see any point of not using it.
Thanks Miss Ileane for your comments , really happy to see you here and get a compliment from you.
p.s Thanks for Saad for giving me the opportunity to write here.
Great advise and information. I will need to think about how to use what I have just read effectively for my site. Thanks for offering up the information.
i am glad i could help you Susan , hoping to see you again so you can apply more stuff tip to your website.
This was a very thought provoking post on was to increase average time. Right now mine is lingering at around 1:50. which i am not disappointed about but would like it near where your example was sitting. I think including a video is a great tip. Not only will they become more visually engaged but spend more time on the blog! Thanks for this awesome post!
well 1.5 is also not bad but i would say the more and more you can engage users the more feedback you will get , and getting a feedback on your work is huge achievement.
Glad you liked the tips, see you soon again.
This has been a very helpful post. Since my website is a service based one I need people to click around on the different page tabs and be involved in the site. I think if i were to implement your tips i would be able to increase my average time spent on the website which will hopefully will help my conversion rate.
you are very right friend , i see that you have a service website , so i would highly recommend you add a attractive video on homepage explaining about your service briefly.
Hey Saad,
You have given nice points to increase Average time on website. I would say that if the Avg time on site is increased then you will have less bounce rate and will be best for Search engines !
Thanks
Hey Saif ,
First of all the post is not by me , it was written by Harneet , secondly you are that google loves less bounce rate but that only one small factor of the ranking because i remember Matt Cutts saying that most of the time person comes to your site , find a useful information he/she needs and goes away.
Hey Harneet
I liked your point of including videos as it is very helpful in increasing average site time.Apart from using humours, story telling is also good for increasing average time.Anyways thanks for sharing this useful post.
Yes Ashish , sharing your experience with other blogger and friends is always good to get a feedback from your readers. Great Tip!
I have been working really hard to bring my bounce rate and time on site numbers to a better level. I have been writing longer more high quality posts and adding video when needed. One thing I noticed after Penguin was that my rankings dropped, but the amount of bot traffic to my site increased. This resulting in a horrible bounce rate. Hopefully I can figure out how to beat the Penguin and get more real people to my blog.
oh thats sucks , dont worry google penguin is not like permanent penalty you can surely get back on google once again , just make your blog more sociable and increase your engagement with your readers.
Great article Harneet and great points.
I would surely try to increase the average time on my blog.
Thanks for the article
Hey Arbaz nice to see you again
, Well Harneet is out and cant reply so i am replying on his behalf.
I am glad you found the article helpful , try to include plugins which increases engagement and videos play a great role when increasing average on blog.
Good article and advice Harneet. While many people surely want to increase time on site they don’t seem to understand the ins and outs of trying to increase that. You did a great job of explaining that, and providing tip to help. Thanks!
well Harneet is traveling and told me to reply to comments , well each and every small factor contributes a lot to the website , like website speed , good content , social engagement , increase average time , good website layout. We should try to take care as much as we can when making a good blog.
Including a video, even as a header is a brilliant way to keep people looking at you site longer. We all love looking at moving stuff
true , i think videos should be called web 3.0 , because they are attractive while passing us a important piece of information.
Hi, just like to say that the world is fast and the Internet users are even faster. A normal user would always look forward for a website with a quick navigation through out. Also stick to the subject and make sure user is able to get what (s)he seeks.
Really useful methods to increase visitor stay time on site. Especially using internal links effectively can be very useful to deliver more related content to the visitor, hence improving the visitor time on site. Thanks Harneet
