Writer’s block is a condition in which writer lost the ability to write further on their current or upcoming writing assignment. It’s like a ‘Dead End’ for a writer. It occurs with almost every writer in some point of their writing career and it is a re-occurring problem.
Do you know that ‘Writer’s Block’ condition can kill your writing career?
Yes It is true my friend. There are several instances where people have changed their profession because of this ‘Writer’s block’ condition.
‘Writer’s Block’ is a condition that can last from several hours to many years. It is an official documented problem especially for professional writers.
Real life Example of Writer’s block
In 1998 “The Goo Goo Dolls’ Johnny Rzeznik” has been quoted as saying he broke several years of writer’s block and several years of sobriety simultaneously the night he wrote the song “Iris” which went on to become one of the most successful singles of all time.
General cause of “Writer’s Block”
- Creativity- When a writer tries to do a creative effort and didn’t find any start point then he/she goes into writer’s block condition.
- Inspiration-Lack of inspiration is also one of the major reasons for writer’s block.
- Depression-If you had a bad time recently and you are in depression due to that then generally ‘writer’s block’ condition arise.
- Pressure-Pressure of doing more in less time also a major reason for “Writer’s block’ condition.
Tips to overcome “Writer’s Block” condition
Take a Break - This is one of the most effective methods to overcome writer’s block condition. Take a break from your daily routine. Go for a holiday, meet your friends and family and spend some time with them to re-fuel your mind with fresh energy.
Having a break give chance to your mind to be stress free. A stress free mind can think much better and more creative.
In your break time you can watch your favorite movie or play your favorite game to rewind your happy moments.
Having a walk or long drive with your loved one also release the stress from your mind.
There are thousand of things that can help you to refresh your mind in this break. You have to choose best one that you can do easily to release all stress from your mind to get back to work with a fresh and full of new thoughts in your mind.
Free writing - This one is mine favorite technique to recover from “writer’s block” condition. If you are not able to start writing on a new or existing project then write freely aimlessly. Write about those things which bring your happy moments back to you.
Writing freely help to release the blockage effectively.
You can write a poem, you can write about yourself or about your family or even about your pet.
You can write about your last coffee break or about your last watched movie experience or your last date. It’s totally up to you.
It’s all about write freely without any aim in your mind. It helps to get your words back to your mind and you will feel good after doing this.
- Complete Easy Task First- Every writing project involve various other thing to do apart from writing and If you have stuck with your writing then it is best to pick some easy task first and complete that e.g. image search and editing . it keeps you confidence that you have completed some portion of your project and it divert your mind from that blockage as well.
- Start from the End - Sometime you stuck in the beginning or your writing because you don’t get starting point for your article; in this situation just start writing about the end of your article. It usually simple to write an end because you know the overall purpose of your article.
e.g. for this article I wrote the Tips part first rather then the starting point because I was not getting the right words to start this article.
Some other helpful Tips
Apart from the above tips there are some other tips that works best and that I have learnt from my own experience.
Create a Diary- to note down all your thoughts and sentence whenever it came into your mind; so that when you struggle with ‘writer’s block situation on a specific topic then you can take help from this collection.
Bookmark inspiring articles- If you are struggling with lack of inspiration then it really works to read some inspirational article that you have read and found interesting. Whenever you find something inspirational then bookmark it for your future use.
Reading other’s success stories also work great in releasing blockage from your mind and keep you motivated.
Re-visit your previous articles-It is again an effective ways to keep yourself motivated by re-visiting your previous article and write-ups. It create a confidence in you that if you have done so much then you can do this new assignment as well.
